GUIDELINES for Signing a Tennessee Title

Make sure you print and sign your name where it says seller EXACTLY the way it appears on the face of the title. Do not Date the title.

  • If the title is in one person’s name only, only that person’s signature is required on the back. Your title (Please sign on the back of under the ASSIGNMENT OF TITLE BY REGISTERED OWNER - seller line only – on newer titles after 1989, you will need to print your name under seller’s signature – do not date).
  • If the person is deceased, a copy of the death certificate along with the papers that provides the executor of the will’s name need to be returned with the title. The executor of the will may then sign the back of the title.
  • If the Title says Jane Doe AND John Doe, BOTH signatures are required.
  • If the Title says Jane Doe AND/OR John Doe, only one signature is required.
  • Please remember the name and signature on the front must match exactly the typed name on the front.
